I have a Monday 0710 BA departure coming up which I suspect will be a busy time. It's great to have fast track in the terminal to the extent it offers any benefit, but what use if you still have to queue for an hour or more to get to a position inside the terminal to use it? Can you speak to one of the outdoor marshalls to jump that queue too?

I believe you can skip the queue outside the terminal if you are hand baggage only.
From what I understand, the queuing outside is only for people with bags to check-in or those who need to go to a check-in desk. Those able to go straight to security can go immediately there, bypassing any queue outside.
That's what I have gleaned from comments here and there that I have read. I do recall Dublin Airport saying a bunch of new security staff were going online throughout June, so it may well be a non-issue even now. I suppose the good news is that the papers have not been full of stories about it lately, which usually means things are working out well.
