I'm renting from Hertz at LAX Hilton tomorrow morning after a 7:05a arrival. A couple of tips a friend based at LAX (who parks at Hilton when flying out for work) offered are:

1. Yes, the Hilton shuttle runs only every half hour. Solution: also look for the Spectrum Parking shuttle, which is literally next door to the west of the Hilton with more-frequent shuttle runs. As a third choice, the LAX Marriott is one more door to the west and their shuttle would do as well, if it happens to be the first to show up. Of course, if one has a bunch of luggage the Spectrum shuttle would be a better choice than the Marriott shuttle.
2. If arriving at T1 like I will, current construction is horrible and it'll take forever for the shuttle to complete the full LAX loop (World Way); so he advised me to take a quick jog south between the parking garages to T9 while my wife and kids stay at T1 and claim our checked luggage (none of which will be in my name) before catching a shuttle. T9 is near the exit and whatever shuttle I get on would then get out and to the Hilton/Spectrum/Marriott relatively quickly. I figure the time I'll need to stand in line at the Hilton and then complete the rental agreement will give my family the time to claim our luggage, get on the shuttle and slog around World Way from T1 before finally exiting and getting to the Hilton.
