I travel fairly often with non-status companions who book on a separate PNR. Occasionally my wife and I need to split up our reservation to use a flight credit or something like that. Sometimes it's a colleague who decided to book earlier or later than me on a work trip. I've never had a problem calling or DMing AA on Twitter and asking to move my companion to a MCE seat.
I have an upcoming trip where I am flying in F and my companion is in Y. I sent a DM as usual with both our PNRs and received this reply:
Is this true or is it a HUCA situation? Seems crazy to me that AA would penalize me by preventing me from using one of the elite benefits (MCE for companions) because I booked in F.

I would count this as a fair answer as you are traveling on separate cabins ( in theory: on the same flight but not together ).
