Had a recent two-night weekend stay here using points (25k/night) and a Suite Upgrade Award. Overall, a bit underwhelmed by the property but glad I finally had a chance to stay at The Beekman after wanting to visit for a couple of years.
Good:
- The physical design of the hotel - especially the public areas - is simply stunning. It's like Wes Anderson designed a hotel in lower Manhattan. Really enjoyed The Bar Room in the evening - great service and ambiance.
- Complimentary bottle of Sauvignon Blanc waiting in my room (I did have my Hyatt Concierge note it was a birthday stay).
- Full breakfast at Temple Court was included for Globalists. At check-in, was told $30 was the maximum allowed for breakfast (which barely covers a breakfast entrée), but ultimately my full breakfast charge was removed by the front desk at checkout without having to ask. (a breakfast entrée, coffee, and juice will easily run $45+/person here unless your just getting oatmeal or yogurt as an entree).
Bad:
- Not impressed by the One Bedroom Suite (standard suite), even by New York size standards. The room couldn't have been much larger than 400sqft, and was really only a "suite" because there was a door added between the bedroom and the hallway that also doubled as a tiny living room. Judging by the floor plans, numerous non-suite rooms seemed comparable in size. There were several other (non-standard) suite categories showing available at check-in, but I was told the cheapest upgrade would be $500/night (which was actually more expensive than the published difference in room rates between the One Bedroom and the available Corner Suites). Not complaining because I received exactly what I reserved, but really a waste of a suite upgrade award in my opinion. I would not have been happy had I been paying the advertised $1000/night for the One Bedroom Suite here. In the future, I'd would recommend just booking a regular room and hoping for an upgrade instead of burning a suite upgrade award.
- Very slow service at breakfast. Both mornings had to wait 30+ mins for coffee which didn't arrive until after the breakfast entrée. On the second morning, I actually left the restaurant and walked over to the complimentary coffee adjacent to the lobby and then returned to my table. Breakfast staff seemed disinterested and disengaged.
- No more DS & Durga bathroom amenities (which I've greatly enjoyed during my nearby Gild Hall stays), despite still being advertised as a benefit on the hotel's website. Now using C.O. Bigelow products - which seem well below what should be offered at a property of this caliber. They also ran out of the C.O Bigelow body wash and instead provided a no-name (Geneva Green) substitute. Granted a minor issue but nonetheless unexpected/disappointing.
- 4pm Globalist late checkout proactively offered at check-in, but then forgotten about at checkout. Was called at 1pm saying I needed to vacate the room, with no acknowledgement of the already offered 4pm checkout. Ultimately the 4pm late checkout was honored, but still a service miss.
All in all, glad I finally stayed at The Beekman but next time I think I'll stick with a comparably priced midtown Hyatt property (Thompson Central Park or Andaz 5th Ave) or Gild Hall if I really need to be in lower Manhattan and then come to The Beekman for drinks/dinner if I'm feeling the need for the Beekman vibe.
