I have a question regarding a seat upgrade.

A few days before my flight from ICN to SFO, I wanted to upgrade to a premium economy seat. Even though there were seats available on the seat map, I couldn't choose any of them to pay for an upgrade. I did however see I could use miles to upgrade and be put on the waitlist. So I decided to use 30,000 miles to be put on the waitlist.

Fast forward to today and when I go to check-in, I see that now the premium economy seats are available to upgrade to for a fee of $247. Since I was unsure if my waitlisted miles upgrade seat would go through, I decided to pay the $247 to upgrade and guarantee my seat in premium economy.

My question is, will I get my miles back from trying to upgrade through miles and getting put on the waitlist? Or are those miles now lost and weren't refundable in the case of deciding to pay for the upgrade instead?
