Just strange to me that if I can do it this way (cancel-credit-rebook-use credit), then why couldn't they just switch me over anyway, as I'd be going through alaskaair.com and not orbitz or expedia or some shop like that.

A credit is only good on published fares, so you would not be able to rebook yourself on the internet using the credit.

If the original ticket was nonrefundable, you forfeit the rest of the value when you rebook different flights into a lower fare
