You can always go to the airport and plead your case to an agent (but don't count on it) - don't bother over the phone - the agents in the Philippines won't be sympathetic and don't appear to have any flexibility.
Thanks for clarifying, I suspected there was no actual policy, and the fare difference was over $1,000. I've had far too many phone conversations with their overseas agents and it's like trying to negotiate with a piece of chalk. I had a supervisor over there refuse to follow the instructions from a HA corporate executive regarding one of my customers because it conflicted with their printed manual.
