We have a 6PM LAX-HNL departure, but can leave earlier in the day, but would rather confirm something in advance that morning rather than sit in the terminal for hours trying standby.

You can always go to the airport and plead your case to an agent (but don't count on it) - don't bother over the phone - the agents in the Philippines won't be sympathetic and don't appear to have any flexibility.
