I just stayed here using 3 free night certificates and want to echo some of the other reviews. Overall, the place is nice but it's not worth the $700++ per night cash rates they are currently charging. The place kind of reminds me of the WA Grand Wailea but not as dated. It's family oriented. It's not as nice as WA Los Cabos Pedregal or the Conrad Koh Samui, Conrad Maldives, Hilton Northolme Seychelles, etc.
We spent one night in Puerto Vallarta first, an Uber to the Conrad cost 700 pesos.
On check in, the $17 per person per night F&B credit was explained, I'm pretty sure she said the credit could be used for breakfast at Arbol or Mesquite. Other reviews here say it can be used for any F&B expense, which may be true.
As a Diamond member, I was upgraded from the base partial ocean view view room to 3rd floor ocean view room in Casa 2. The upgrade appeared in the app/website about 8 hours before check in. I think I could have used online check in to change to a better located casa (Casa 2 is at least better than Casa 1) or a higher floor but I didn't know any better and didn't do that.
They accommodated my request for early check in and had the room ready at 1pm when I arrived which was great, so I didn't push for any further upgrade.
First impression of the room I was unimpressed because it had a connecting door to another room, which I hate. I usually ask specifically for "no connecting door" but at these price points I just didn't expect to be sharing an internal door with a neighbor. I never heard or noticed the neighbor though, maybe the adjoining room was unoccupied the whole time.
I did notice that ocean view rooms were selling for over $1,000++ a night ($1300 with tax), even more than the ocean front rooms, and I don't understand why. in my opinion, the ocean front rooms, located in the casas directly overlooking the beach/ocean would be far superior, more private, in an more luxurious setting. My ocean view room was fine but it overlooked the pool, which I'm not a fan of, as there a constant low level noise when sitting on the balcony, both from the children playing in pool and the music pumped by the resort through the pool area during the day time. Here is this view.
If anyone can explain why the ocean view rooms cost more than ocean front here, I'd be interested to hear it.
I did ask a front desk clerk about the different room levels and he explained that the base level partial ocean view rooms are all in the tower. Some of the high floor rooms in tower are ocean view. All rooms in the casas are either ocean view or ocean front.
If i came here again I've probably just ask if they have oceanfront upgrades available. Or choose a room on a higher floor (the casas are 5 floors). Or request a different casa as casa 2 appears to be one of the closest to the "family pool" whereas the ocean view casas on the opposite side of the resort appear to be set back a bit from the pool and they are on the adult pool side.
There was some confusion about the dining options because the hotel website says Mesquite is only open for breakfast and lunch and that it is closed all day Wednesday. I called to ask if that was true and staff asked if I had seen the restaurant schedule for the week and I said so. they explained that certain restaurants are open on certain days and that Mesquite would be open for breakfast lunch and dinner for all three days of my stay. i asked if a reservation was required for Mesquite for dinner and was told yes but i can't believe that's really true, as i made the reservation just 2 hours in advance and the restaurant did not appear to be near full.
The menu pricing is a bit odd -it shows the prices including the 10% service charge and 16% tax and then when you get the bill it shows the lesser pre-tax menu prices and then the tax and service fee are added on. I'm not sure why they do it that way.
I was asked at check in, by every restaurant host, and by every waiter at every meal if I had food allergies.
The food was fine and the prices expensive but overall reasonable for a resort like this I thought. I'm not a foodie though.
If you want to save a bit on food, I recommend ordering room service, they have more comfort food items and don't add a delivery surcharge and if your drink the free bottled water provided in your room you can get away with spending like $25-30 a person vs. $50-$75 per person in the restaurant.
There is also a coffee shop off the lobby that sells not just pastries and coffee but also sandwiches and snack food like potato chips, candy bars, peanuts, etc. A can of coke from the coffee shop costs $3 vs. $5 if ordered to your room. A can of Corona is $4 vs. $8 if ordered to your room or at a hotel bar.
The room had an empty fridge and I was told they could stock it with what I wanted. There was also a sign that said free bottled water and coffee service. Maids hand out bottled water liberally during the morning service and turndown service.
Speaking of maids, this was a disappointing aspect of the stay. We'd stay in until 9-10, go to breakfast and not see any maids around when we left the room. Come back 1.5 hours later, still no maids in sight, rooms not cleaned. Or I'd call after breakfast when heading to the beach for 1-2 hours, specifically ask for cleaning, they'd say OK, then I'd come back 2 more hours later and no maids in sight and room not cleaned.
There is a privacy and make up room toggle switch inside the door, though standing outside the door there I couldn't see any indicator as to whether a guest was requesting privacy or the room made up. Now maybe I hd privacy flipped on before going to breakfast and the maids came in the early morning and saw that and just skipped the room until mid-afternoon. i don't know. I was just frustrated with what felt like non-existent housekeeping service during the day because the room got pretty dirty and the towels well used, which tends to happen at beach resorts. The turn down service was much more reliable.
There are two ATMs near the lobby.
I was charged $102 for the one way hotel transfer back to the airport. (I believe they charge $142 from airport to resort).
I was also charged $54 for the 8 mile one way trip to Sayulita for dinner one night. I thought that was high. But the taxi stand at Sayulita plaza demanded $35 to go back. Apparently Uber doesn't work there.
I asked for a late check out until 2pm and they gave me that which I appreciated.
Anyway, overall, I think this is an OK use of Hilton free night certificates if you are based in the USA and have certificates to burn, especially if your home city has direct flights to Puerto Vallarta, and especially if you have kids, as they have a water slide, kids club, game room, etc. I wouldn't recommend paying the $700++ cash rates to stay here.
But I'd recommend WA Los Cabos Pedregal over this resort if you're a couple.
I also suspect Conrad Tulum and the new Hilton Cancun might be better choices, though I haven't been there.
