That becomes IRROPS and the rules (mostly) go out the window, as
findark said. Two things could happen:
1 - UA may allow you to reschedule onto an earlier BNA-EWR flight
2 - UA's computers may book you onto the
next BNA-EWR-SNN flight. That would be unfortunate, as it would release your seats in EWR-SNN and someone else might pick them up.
Generally, #1 would be the default option. If #2 happens, you'd want to call ASAP to try to get your seats back. (I'd normally expect #1 for cancellations prior to the day of travel and #2 on the day of travel itself, because they don't want to give someone last-minute instructions to get to the airport a few hours early).
