It depends on the partner. Couple examples:
Qatar redeposits automatically for me, usually within 15-20 minutes. Only exception is if ticket had been changed or reissued. Then have to call.
AT never redeposits automatically, always have to call. But it's a painless 2-3 minute call once connected to an agent & the miles are usually back a few minutes after.
Qantas is the worst. Not refunded automatically and they take control of the ticket. So it's wait time for the agent + wait time for the agent to connect to a help desk that can actually complete the transaction. Anytime I have to work a transaction involving a Qantas award, I factor 60-90 minutes hold going in - AFTER I reach an agent.
AA is all over the map on partner redeposits. It'd be helpful if they published a chart so folks knew what to expect.
