Ah, I have data points on this too - out of about half a dozen AS flights, all but one time I've been able to have the agent at the check in desk and/or gate add me and a companion to the upgrade waitlist; however, as far as I'm aware the policy is technically still only the main status holder, no companion. So, YMMV, but definitely ask.
Thanks! Any luck on being added to upgrade list by calling a phone agent so that you get the upgrade at the proper 100hr window versus at the airport? I have an upcoming flight that I'm in between going AA or AS (preferred as I can use my companion certificate), and may just stick to AA this time I guess.
