I always get rejected at the eGates. Usually try a few gates and then give up. Last night around 10pm, I just got ahead of a few large groups and guy in front of me at the eGate tried 3 times and got the "Seek Assistance" message. Didn't fancy my chances and wasn't looking forward to getting in the (now very long) line to see a border agent. And would you believe it, thing worked first time! Might buy some lottery tickets today.
