That should be fine, I assume that Ethiopian has an online check-in option, even if they will not issue a boarding pass check in online. There are transit desks, even if not manned by Ethiopian staff, they can call Ethiopian, or talk to the lounge attendants if you have access to the ANA lounges.
There has been no reports of people specifically transferring to Ethiopian though.
