We just had the same idea and I contacted a friend, who lives in my town in Euroland and he is GOLD too.
So we met and just did some experiments at his computer. Result: when HE (GOLD) logs in, he can transfer avios to me free of charge ... when I (GGL) log in, I will be charged 30 Euros, when I want to transfer avios to him.
Is ist possible that the BA shopping system has an software issue only recognizing GOLD as free of charge, but not the status level above gold?

I’m fairly sure it’s a software issue, most likely a missed requirement that has the unfortunate impact to make it exclude GGL members.
In my day job I work for the company that runs that site but I’m not directly involved with that product.
