Ive only done IB J long haul from MAD-MIA and this was my perception but it was for the tier points to get gold. I have to say the experience, food, flight and seat was one of the best flights. I guess a stopover in MIA is slightly more appealing than a there and back to LHR.

I liked the experience so much I booked another TP run DUB-LCY-MAD-JFK-MIA. Sadly BACF cancelled the LCY-MAD sector so I *has* to be rebooked on the one stop direct service from LCY-JFK according to the IB call centre so I was rebooked on the babybus.

Im sorry you had this experience. MAD is an OK destination in so far as you can get drinks, meal, coffee plus a few top ups without it being rushed like AMS DUB BRUand UK DOMESTICS.
