If you look at flights, you can see what the taxes are (AA breaks it down). By looking at award flights you can avoid taxes that are based on a percent of airfare

The only tax that varies by class is the APD. The APD is $105.20 for main cabin and $231.60 for premium economy and higher. So if you are currently in economy and upgrade to a higher cabin you would owe $125.40. If you are currently in premium economy or higher you would not owe anything for upgrading.

This is in USD of course and can change as the exchange rate changes. The actual amounts (from https://www.gov.uk/guidance/rates-an...passenger-duty) are £84 and £185, meaning that if you get upgraded you would owe £101 ($124.51 at today's exchange rate, which more or less matches)
