EC261 doesn't really allow people to bring flights forward, the provision is "next available flight or next convenient flight" after the cancellation. BA's traditional policy of -3 days, +14 days is therefore generous for "next available flight" and then same fare class provision exists for "next convenient flight". But I agree something went wrong with ticketing but it's not clear exactly at what stage.
