Yes, did this in 2021 but in reverse.
RHO-ATH-FCO but used Gold upgrade on ATH-FCO segment.

Was granted 32x3kg for baggage allowance.
Check-in agent might need a casual reminder of the greater allowance if First segment is Y, Second segment is J.
