That was always a complaint of mine, never was able to get the ol' lady an upgrade in advance with "valuable" NonePass® miles, but almost always got the companion upgrade.

All I wanted to do was burn some miles to alleviate "upgrade anxiety"

Now I'm resigned to use my remaining miles for Amtrak "Land Cruises"
