A couple of days ago, I arrived at LAX to check in for my flight to AMS on KL. I tried to check in online the day before, but received some message about needing to contact the airline to complete check in. My mistake to not call immediately, but I figured it was some sort of glitch with documentation requirements and the app. I’ve run into issues trying to check in on the app for international flights in the past and all was fine when I arrived at the airport.

However, when I tried to check in this time, the agent had a confused look on her face. Then she asked if I had a business class ticket, as I was in the business class check in line. She conferred with someone that seemed to be a supervisor, who said I had an economy seat. I explained that I had used a delta GUC and that I was told it was confirmed at booking. I was told then that I had to call delta and have the ticket re-issued. Called delta and was able to get the ticket re-issued, but despite getting through to the diamond line within a couple of minutes, the fix took about an hour and a half as the diamond agent said she had to wait for another department to help. She updated me every 15-20 minutes as I was on hold and once she got through, the fix only took about 10 minutes. By the time the ticket was re-issued, I was cutting it very close. The check in supervisor called the gate to tell them not to close the flight as she was trying to check me in. Then she literally said “Sh**, do you know how to run?” My gate was 225, which is about as far as it could have been. Fortunately, I do run, so I ran the entire way. Made the flight and the rest was uneventful, other than that my bag didn’t make it.

So, how would I know if a ticket has been re-issued correctly if the GUC is cleared at booking? My confirmation email showed business on all legs. Both the delta and KLM apps showed business and the KLM app let me select seats in advance. One odd thing was that my seat assignment had disappeared from the app for the first leg the day prior to the flight when I attempted to check in. My seat assignment for the second leg from AMS was still there.
Clock recipet and verify the fare class shown here (not the one shown on the reservation page) shows O for DL operated segments and Z for KL. Ticket must be reissued at time of upgrade if upgrading partners. It can be queued if only DL segments are upgraded. If agent suggests otherwise, they're wrong. The partner will eventually cancel the upgrade if no new ticket is issued. This can happen as soon as 48-72 hours upto DoD.
