As noted many times, the online FHR rates now book through Expedia. They can be a great deal, but it's a mistake to book based on the assumption they will credit to Marriott. If one does credit, count yourself lucky, because technically Marriott is correct to deny based on the third-party booking language.
I made an FHR booking end of last year that was indeed showing as coming from Expedia at the hotel, but the night and points posted fine. Was there an unannounced change in the eligibility of AMEX FHR bookings??? That would be very disappointing.
