A tailstand is a lot less expensive as it doesn't add all that extra weight to the airplane that must be carried around wherever you go. The 727 and DC9/MD80 lines also used the aft stairs for other purposes that are no longer needed today with almost universal jetbridges and airstairs.

Engineering is about compromises. Gain something in one area at the cost of losing something in another.
