If I simply HAD to do it like this, despite this objectively being a fairly risky itinerary, I’d skip checking luggage. I mean, really, you’re going to be on two tickets (so if AS gets you to LAX late, too bad so sad, B6 doesn’t care), why add additional possible points of failure if you’re going to play Russian roulette with your travel (and chance having to buy an expensive last minute ticket)?

PS: don’t tell me this is you trying to come home from Burning Man and that’s why you’re checking some (very dusty) luggage…
