Interestingly I am in the UK but buy my cars in Eire. The price differential is nothing to do with richer or poorer but to do with the penal levels of tax on new cars charged in Eire, which in turn depress the basic tax exempt price of cars there.
The EU as a single market simply does not exist because there are so many similar differences.
The motor trade has not been required by the EU to eliminate price differetials but only been forced to limit (if not eliminate) the obstacles put in the way of overseas car purchases. All that is required is that the same be done for airlines.
One major problem stems from the restrictions imposed on the use of overseas credit cards for online or telephone bookings (which does not apply to tickets booked through non internet agents). If this restriction were removed there would be a very big shake up in the market.
