Advice on Combining AS & B6 Flights

Hi! Hoping for some advice from the experts.

I need to get from Reno to JFK in early September, and my most ideal itinerary involves the following flights:
  • AS 3444 - departs RNO 10:10AM, arrives LAX at 11:45AM
  • B6 1524 - departs LAX 1:45PM, arrives JFK at 10:29PM
Here are the questions/considerations though:
  1. I'm checking bags... do AS and B6 have an interline agreement?
  2. Do I absolutely need to buy this as a single ticket to get them to tag my bags all the way through?
    1. If yes: any tips on how to purchase a ticket like this?
    2. If no: how does it work?
  3. If I decided to re-check my bags in LAX... is that an awful idea? I think it is. But appreciate the validation
Thanks in advance for any help!
