This is all very helpful, thank you.
Specifically, what was cancelled were the LHR-SEA and SEA-LHR flights, both BA flight numbers operated by AA. Ticket was purchased in December 2021 and flights are in July and August, 2022. Notifications about various schedule changes and cancellations have come repeatedly starting a few weeks after purchase. I've been waiting to fix them to be close enough to travel to have some hope that they won't be wrecked again.
From BA emails:
"
We're sorry that your upcoming flights have been cancelled. We'll do everything we can to get you where you need to be... Please be aware that if you agree to choose a different departure point or destination to the ones on your original booking, you can't claim expenses for travel from, to or between these locations, such as car hire, parking costs or train tickets."

You also have the "flexible destination" policy but this is limited to 300 miles of origin/destination. BCN/MUC is more than 300 miles so this wont be possible.
Would I be crazy to ask BA to change this MAD-MFR-BCN trip to OPO-MFR-MUC? MAD and OPO are under 300 miles, though switching BCN to MUC would be a generous reading of "do everything we can to get you where you need to be." If they'll do that they can put me an any flight they want.
