But after reading around Flyertalk, I am thinking there may be better ways to do this. Things that come to mind are the AA shopping portal to purchase gift cards, Costco, etc... If you're married to AA miles there's really no secret or workaround as far as I know. Purchasing on your Citi card would net you 9k AA miles and 4.5k Loyalty Points.
If you're not married to AA miles then go sign up for another Amex or Chase card that will give you a much better return for travel spend. For example sign up for an Amex Plat and this would get you almost to the sign up bonus spend so you'd net 100k plus another ~25k for the airfare spend. 125k Amex points sounds way better than 9k AA miles.
