If you have coverage through your Amex Platinum card, then there is even less to worry.
I had an Avis rental a few years ago in Southern California. Because of some road debris (gravel?) on a freeway, my vehicle sustained two or three small -- but very visible -- windshield chips. When I returned the car, I pointed out the damage, the return attendant circled the areas with a crayon, and the car was taken out of service for repair. I initiated a claim with Chase, but never needed to perfect it: Avis never billed me for the chips. (I suspect that at larger Avis stations, they do windshield-chip repairs in house; not sure if that explains why I was never billed.)
