I see two options:
#1) re-book the originating flight. This sucks because I have to get to the Kelowna airport at 4am with a wife and kid. NOT a positive thing! It also sucks because I would have 6 hours at YVR instead of 1.
#2) chance it. The next flight to Houston, however, would mean 7 hours in YVR plus not arriving in Houston until after midnight. The flight after that means 12 hours in YVR and a redeye.
Choosing #1 means 100% chance of having those negatives while #2 mean X% chance of having those negatives (but, obviously, some chance of having it work out nicely). I suppose I'd like to narrow down the value of X. Are we likely to make it?
What would you do?
No, we don't have Nexus, etc.
I agree with
emcampbe. If you're traveling during the summer, I'd be nervous about a 1:18 connection time with a child.
I did a search for a random date -- Wednesday, July 13 -- and I think I found the flights you're talking about; AC 8271 (Jazz) from 10 AM to 10:57 AM, connecting to UA 2057 at 12:15 PM. On that date, if you missed the YVR-IAH flight, there would be a flight at 12:30 through DEN that arrives in Houston at 8:47 PM -- only two hours late, but I doubt you could be rebooked onto it in time. There's another flight through Chicago at 2 PM that arrives in Houston at midnight, and several more options through LAX, SFO, and DEN that would arrive just after midnight.
You mention the "next flight" to Houston that arrives around midnight; I checked several upcoming dates and I don't see that on the schedule.
Trying to make that connection feels like it would be stressful, especially if you're talking about a peak travel time. It's possible to make it, but you're talking about an "everything goes right" scenario.
