Be aware: The points (and most hotel) reservations are locked/expired at midnight local time, sometimes before, at least online. I've never tried to book a room the prior night after midnight, never mind with points... so if you're arriving late at night you may be stuck with nothing but a paid room option locally.
Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but I've booked same "night" reservations after midnight (
i.e. booked a Monday-Tuesday room at 1am Tuesday) with SPG properties before Marriott's SPG purchase. I think I've done the same with Marriott, although I am not 100% certain. I've also arrived at my hotel at 3:30am local time without incident..
