On my tickets, I'm pretty sure the refund would be extremely profitable. I booked them last year when the traffic was uncertain and prices cheap and now it picked up. They will be able to sell my seats at much better profit.
I think keeping the XXX-ATH leg on A3 is the most important factor for success.
For outbound, it is possible via WAW and to ATH on A3 metal. For inbound, the connection would be crazy, departing early in the morning and arriving late in the evening and the only reasonable connection is on pure LH metal. If they cannot accommodate it, it may be better for me to return from WAW by train.
I'm very unhappy with these games. The EC 261/2004 is clear: the flight must be acceptable to me and the (in)convenience and the cost to the airline is irrelevant. They should have not cancelled the original flight and everybody would be happy.
