Qatar Airways to multiple Oz cities is 180,000 Avios plus £600.
BA peak date to Sydney is 300,000 Avios plus nearly £1,000.
BA with a GPR to Sydney would be 600,000 Avios plus nearly £1,000.
Even the Qatar option isn’t a great deal if you can get a cash fare under £2k which pre covid was usually possible from somewhere in Europe.
We have a large number of Avios, and collect a significant additional number of American Express points each year. We need to fly during specific times due to school holidays, and the cash fares are £6k+ per person, and we are a family of 4. Starting ex-EU is not really an option given the age of our children and the length of the journey.
Qatar is showing no availability whatsoever over the Christmas / New Year period, so it's either pay £25k or use 2.4m Avios plus £4k. For us the latter is a better option simply due to the number of AmEx points we are able to collect.
