win one, lose one...klm roulette?

Booked a flight to LAX from AMS for my partner and myself for July. Paid up and got our tickets. I decided to try for upgrades and contacted FD Helpdesk 19.45 GMT. Agent told me that 2 upgrades were indeed available. My partner and I always travel on separate PNR's after a fiasco some time ago. The agent completed the details for the upgrade for my partner and confirmed it had gone through. He then began to process the upgrade for me. Literally within seconds he came back to say that he was shocked there was no longer any availability. He tried again and told me that indeed this 2nd upgrade had "gone". He suggested it might be a computer glitch and told me to ring the HD first thing today. I did, only to have them confirm that there was no availability on the day in question and suggested that in the few seconds between the completion of one upgrade request and the beginning of the next, the upgrade in question had gone to someone else.

Anybody out there mathematically inclined enough to work out the odds of it happening. Bear in mind that the request was for a day over 8 months in the future, it was 19.45 at the time, so half the world had gone to bed and the "window of opportunity" was about 1 min. max, then factor in that we are both PE's..(not that this now makes any difference), and throw in the fact that for the past 4 years we have bought tickets in Nov. and had no trouble whatsoever in getting upgrades shortly afterwards, for flights to / from the USA 8 months later.

I would appreciate a logical explanation and no! "This is KLM" is not
permissible
