In general it still covers you cancel only part of your trip (or delay the start).
But, my reading of the severe weather section is that if the air carrier cancels the flight for severe weather (as opposed to you not being able to make it to the airport), you are only covered it you miss 20% or more of your scheduled trip. So if your trip is 5 days or shorter, then that 1 night would be more than 20% and would be covered.
But this wording is pretty new and not a lot of data points on this thread with the new wording yet.
