I don't think you quite understood.
Sometimes a flight in J from LHR-DXB will be £2200 but LHR-DXB-BKK will be £1800. EK do charge a bit extra to spend some days in Dubai (another poster did mention £50), but it is still far better value.
Another example would be Hong Kong (pre COVID obviously) would be £2500 as opposed to £2200 just to Dubai. Whilst more expensive, still a heck of a lot cheaper than a trip to Dubai and then a trip to Hong Kong from London separately.
