I also thought it was weird so I called back and got an agent who initially said stopovers were not allowed but after we talked a bit he said he would try to price it and he gave me an astronomical cost and said it would be better to buy it as two separate tickets.

So I checked Orbitz and it gave me a cost half of what the ticket agent gave me but still more than buying separate tickets (in this case I am able to do the transatlantic piece as part of the RT and add on an intra-Europe flight— I did consider only using one way tickets but was shocked at the price) so I guess that’s what I’ll do.
