We had the same on the way to Sweden a fortnight ago. We were told it's because they need to check the passport validity for entry into the EU given the requirements for a certain number of months left post-trip. I don't know if it's Sweden being particularly hot on this, as that's the only EU flight we've done recently without having bags to drop too thus showing our passports anyway.

Word of warning: Swedish border control at Gothenburg were surprisingly unfriendly, and not only asked the purpose of our visit to Sweden but also demanded proof of our return flight booking. Of course the BA app chose that moment to not load future flights, but showing our itinerary in TripIt was thankfully sufficient. Of course there is no actual need to have a return flight booked (we are on bog standard British passports, nowhere near 90 days in the EU recently) but you don't argue with border control...
For the first 10-12 years of Sweden being in Schengen, Swedish border control police would ask me no questions when using a US passport to enter Schengen at Swedish airports of entry and were friendlier. In the most recent 7-10 years, Swedish border control police at airports have become more interested in asking questions of US passport users than Norwegian, Finnish and male Danish passport control police at airports of entry are. And the less friendly Swedish approach that hits US passport users has finally come around to hit UK passport users too. The friendliness I as a US passport user get from the typical Danish passport border control at CPH on entry and exit is much better than I get from Swedish passport control at airports. But the Swedes have been more eager to kick out UK and US passport users since the start of the pandemic than Danes since the start of the pandemic. And maybe it shows in how airlines are dealing with passengers traveling to some Schengen airports of entry.
