The version of SABRE that AA has long predates the SaaS version. It's the version that AA built - the current Sabre company is a spin off; AA retained the IP to their legacy version.
The problem is that the original SABRE was built in the 1960s and it's held together by prayers, chewing gum, punch cards and carrier pidgeons.
While not commenting on the outgoing CIO as I have no knowledge on their specific pros/cons, it's safe to say that any CIO will fail at American unless they're given a wholesale mandate and budget to rebuild their GDS. Other wise, it's an endless maintenance job on a 60 year old piece of software that should have seen end of life decades ago.
