Bicycle went missing on second leg of EWR > YYZ > LIS. How should I proceed?

Flew from EWR to LIS yesterday via YYZ on an award ticket. First leg was on UA, second leg on AC.

I checked two pieces of luggage at EWR: one suitcase and a bicycle, properly packed in a cardboard box. According to the UA app, both items made it to YYZ. However, upon arriving in LIS, only the suitcase arrived and the bike is nowhere to be found. To make matters more frustrating, LIS uses third party services for lost baggage. I was told to file a report with Portway who handle lost baggage for Air Canada. I filed a report with them and now it seems to be in god's hands. They said they'd reach out to me tomorrow. If they're unable to track down the bike in 5 days, it becomes Air Canada's problem.

Has anyone experienced something similar? I'm pretty concerned that I'm never going to see my bike again and am wondering if I should contact Air Canada directly. This all happened a few hours ago and I'm only now in a position to pursue the matter further. Thanks in advance.
