If I confirm an upgrade using an SWU on the domestic leg of an international itinerary (e.g. XXX-LAX leg of XXX-LAX-LHR-XXX) when the international leg doesn’t have any C (upgrade) space available, will the SWU still be waitlisted for the international leg even after the original SWU expiration date?

I know there is no guarantee of upgrade space opening between now and departure, but is this even possible if I’m willing to roll the dice?
