Oftentimes with a cancellation I opt to take the switch to a future flight between the same city pairs as opposed to the refund as flight prices have increased so much since I booked the ticket. I actually got pushback on this last month from revenue management but I stood my ground and got a straight exchange for 2 peak flights over Thanksgiving instead of the small refund.
