ok, going to answer my own question. turns out we all had simple numerical passwords from old. However, the password reset did not work from the website. However, trying to log on with the android app created a password reset email to be sent correctly and with the new new, stronger password reqs I was able to log on. very annoying, but hopefully this helps someone avoid a couple of days worth of hair-pulling
