An Overrated Costa Rica hotel in need of a refresh.
Introduction This was my first trip to Costa Rica and the cash rates at this hotel were pretty high ($800+/night). I opted to book this with 20k points a night. Expectations were high for this hotel and completely justified as there are several other hotels in this area that are much cheaper than the Andaz while offering the same or more experiences.Booked: 1 King Bed Forest View for 3 nights (20k points/night)Navigating around Costa Rica was very easy with the car rental I had for the drives and the hikes I did. One pet peeve: I grew tired after the first day of the whole fake "Pura Vida" phrase being repeated to you at least 10 times daily by Andaz employees. It’s not even genuine – its all manufactured script. This property is very popular with WOH elites and pretty hard to find any suites unless you book advance + apply a TSU. There was absolutely zero suite availability for those 3 months in advance. It wasn't until 2 days before check-in, I received suite room alerts from OpenHotelAlert. I set this alert notify me if any Suites were available as I got closer to my stay. I got very lucky, because someone either cancelled last minute or hotel opened up suite availability last minute. Once I saw the availability, I called my Concierge to apply my TSU before it would be booked by someone else. She was very surprised as well because she echoed this property is always difficult for suite availability. Property exteriors looked pretty outdated, in need of a refurbishment in my opinion. Interior designs were very spacious and modern. Rain fall shower, views, beds, amenities were very well! Be aware of the Monkeys on passing on the roof and trees by the pools. Do not approach them for pictures and do not leave any valuables unattended in these areas. Saw a monkey steal headphones and sunglasses because they were left unattended. The guest did not get them back. Property was at about 50% occupancy according to the FD, Adults-only pool lounge chairs were always crowded and hard to find a lounger after 2PM. Probably only 1 or 2 guests in the pool, as the pool wasn't cleaned (see my pictures) to really enjoy a swim. I preferred walking to get around in the property, although the buggy carts they provide come quick. Go to the Sombrero Claro beach and just relax. It was calm and quiet to just unwind and watch the sunset while the sky changes colors. Overall It got quite boring after the 3rd night, and I realized that it would've been more ideal to spend nights at Tabacon Thermal Resort that's also bookable on Hyatt through the SLH program. Tabacon has really good reviews and a much more better vibe than the Andaz for younger people like myself. Dining Some pictures of the food and breakfastGlobalist breakfast benefit at Rio Bhongo: One of the highlights of my stay here although the restaurant employees were not 100% correct on what would be covered. I was told I could only get the buffet, and that any smoothies and other items from the menu would be extra. That was completely false, as I got the buffet + 2 entrees from the menu + several juices and smoothies that were all comped when I signed the bill. Food and beverages in terms of Lunch and Dinner at the Andaz were just so limited, bland, and overpriced. For nearly the same price, I was able to get much better portions, more food choices, and better quality at the Four Seasons which was about a short buggy drive away from the Andaz. Hotel provided complimentary to/from the Four Seasons. Chao Pescao and Ostra were overrated at the Andaz.
