This is fairly commonplace at the low-end brands of Wyndham, Choice, and some other hotel chains. There's diamonds in the rough, and there's a fair amount of acceptable properties, but there's also some that are to be avoided at all costs. My general rule is to avoid any place that's not at least 3.5 stars on Google for customer reviews and at least 6/10 on hotels.com (and between 6 and 7 is iffy.) If it's borderline I'll look at the reviews in a bit more detail - sometimes people just have unrealistic expectations but there's also plenty of legitimate complaints. I've also found a good rule is to look at the reviews and see what the breakdown of review stars is - if there's a lot of 1s and a lot of 5s but not a lot of 2-4s, that's a red flag, but if there's a lot of 3s and 4s compared to 1s and 2s that's a good sign for a low-end hotel even if the average star value is otherwise borderline. However, basically every low-end chain requires research for specific locations to see if it's good enough, and booking simply based on it being a chain vs independent can result in some very poor hotel stays.
