Reykjavik EDITION = New Luxury Hotel in Iceland Falls a Bit Short for Now
Introduction There were no Marriott options in Iceland in the past except for a handful of Design Hotels so I previously stayed more in Hilton properties than Marriott, however now with an EDITION opened October 2021 I had to try it. Normally an EDITION hotel should be noticeably above a Canopy brand hotel because EDITION is supposed to be luxury and Canopy is not what Hilton considers to be one of its luxury brands, however in Reykjavik I thought EDITION fell a bit short of expectations despite some strengths so Canopy might be better value at this point in time in my opinion. Room The most valuable perk of Marriott Ambassador status for me is when they upgrade to premium suites instead of upgrading me to the same room type than a Platinum or a Titanium theoretically would (= entry level suite). Here I booked the entry level room and was upgraded to a sea view suite, if I had to guess, perhaps they upgrade Platinums to loft room and Titanium to harbor view suites, anyway I was quite pleased with the generous upgrade and as expected it's a new & shiny property so the hardware looks nice, and the style fits with what EDITION is supposed to be; perhaps a bit minimalist similar to Park Hyatts. The terrace is front is probably only usable a few months per year but unfortunately the construction of the building in front makes me think that privacy will become an issue once that building is occupied because it's right in front of EDITION. Our room was in the corner so we had a view on the side but other rooms on our floor would mostly have the view of that building, probably making the terrace less interesting than what EDITION had in mind when they designed the hotel. While I was thankful for the premium suite, if I was paying cash for it I might be moderately disappointed because it was not that spacious, it did not have an extra half bath which I consider relatively important for a premium suite in a luxury hotel, and some of the hardware was not as high quality as I would expect for a luxury hotel. For instance the patio door and windows were not that sturdy considering the climate and some of the furniture such as the desk and tables were too reminiscent of Ikea style. Finally, the bathroom was probably a bit bland and boring.Iceland is not the place where hotels are expected to have air conditioning but for what it’s worth on the most sunny days our room would get over 25C in the afternoon if we kept the patio door closed; thankfully by keeping the door wide open we could bring temperature down to a reasonable level but after closing it for the night it would start becoming a bit warm again. Without a terrace if we only had to rely on the small windows I think temperature would become a problem. Many rooms at this hotel do not have a patio door so I wonder how hot it would get in the summer for rooms facing the afternoon sun.Iceland is not the place where hotels are expected to have air conditioning but for what it’s worth on the most sunny days our room would get over 25C in the afternoon if we kept the patio door closed; thankfully by keeping the door wide open we could bring temperature down to a reasonable level but after closing it for the night it would start becoming a bit warm again. Dining Breakfast was entirely a la carte but not extensive enough in my opinion so during a longer stay it might tend to get boring. The fruit bowl was particularly naked and expensive for what it was, unlike the main dishes which were quite good and better priced. I found the hotel bar to be nicer than the food offerings at the hotel. In addition the strength might get even better because the hotel will open a new rooftop bar in perhaps one month time; it was not ready just yet at the time of our stay. Service Service ranged from excellent down to well short of luxury level during my stay. First off they did not have a proper pillow menu but they asked me what I was looking for and brought something that met our needs and helped us have good nights of sleep. Service was also very responsive to various requests via the Marriott app chat including printing and some billing issues including redeeming numerous gift cards. The main service failure was regarding housekeeping. One day we informed reception before leaving the hotel that we wanted the room to be cleaned during our absence. When we came back two hours later they were not even close to be finished so most likely they started much later than when we requested. Then the next day it was even worse, they had not come at all by the time we came back to the hotel despite going out of our way to ask at reception. While these missteps happen from time to time in non-luxury hotels, I am less tolerant of staying in an unclean room in a luxury hotel when I specifically make the request and when I need the room after coming back (hence the request). In other hotels sometimes they offer some kind of service recovery or at least an apology call to the room from housekeeping or a note sent to the room, but here there was nothing at all. Then at check-out the same lady from reception who knew what happened processed my check-out as quickly as she could without discussing our stay. Location I thought the biggest difference between Canopy and EDITION was location. EDITION is in a more upscale neighborhood by the water whereas Canopy is in the city center close to lots of pubs; we could hear loud drunks from the room at Canopy during the night so it's location which makes EDITION a better hotel in my opinion, more so than the hardware. The sea views were extra icing on the cake especially from our suite at EDITION which is not something Canopy can compete with. Wifi Wifi worked well with speed of 20-30 Mbps. Overall If I compare EDITION with Canopy by Hilton, the hardware at Canopy was surprisingly excellent last time I stayed before covid in 2019, and perhaps even better than at EDITION. I preferred breakfast at Canopy, service at EDITION will possibly improve at some point but they are not completely there yet, but EDITION is in the better location by far. In the summer it seems like Canopy is priced similarly to EDITION so I would not blame someone for picking EDITION but in the winter for the moment Canopy seems to be the better deal unless EDITION decides to drop the rates for the low season in the next few months.
