Completely shooting in the dark here but could this be trying to correct IRROPS that resulted in a flight for today being cancelled? In that case, they may not have enough seats on the equivalent flight for tomorrow to fit all passengers from both flights so they pulled an extra plane to help out but it's too much of a hassle to get this make-up flight available for booking with how few seats they'd sell for an international flight within 24 hours.
I've been on one of these "9000-series" flights - ATL > LHR, 767-400 (replaced another plane)... that could be correct.
