Your needs didn't "trump" theirs. Your wants did. You made a selfish decision in the moment. Just own it, don't make excuses. You had it right in your original post: "

Exactly my point. I'm tired of this selfish attitude everyone has.
I had a very similar situation to OP a few weeks ago, DEN-DFW for a connecting flight to Rome where the DEN-DFW flight was delayed about 30 minutes. I was also in Row 1, and I sat down until the passengers who needed to make their tight connections offloaded. It may have added 5 minutes to my day, but it probably saved them the 20+ hours of headaches if they had missed their connection.
