Tmobile partners with Vodafone in India. Vodafoneshut down its 3G network in 2021, and this is probably the source of the OP's problem. 4G is mostly offered on band 40, and sometimes on band 3. There are no bands in common with US TMobile (LTE bands 2/4/5/12/66/71).

So it depends on whether the phone in use (not the SIM) supports the Indian bands actually being used in the area. Newer and more expensive US phones do support a wide range of LTE bands, but not all phones do.
interested to hear more about this phone compatibility in India with TMobile.

we’re going next month - with an iPhone 13 and my wife on a 12 Max. I suspect we should be supported there.

we’ll be in Chennai and Bangalore for a few days, where I think it’ll be fine. But the few days we’ll be in a village in Tamil Nadu May be an issue. I know BSNL works there, and I think Airtel somewhat now. We were thinking about getting local SIMs, but I’m looking into it and seems like a pretty big PITA still.
