I'm glad to know the company policy, but on my flight I'm certain the woman across the aisle with the snack pack was not charged for it, nor was the guy who posted right above you. I think the F FA's probably feel really cheap asking for money up there, and probably why many don't. If it had come down to only the cheese plate or the awful choice for me (the way she described it was atrocious) I would have asked for my preordered Y food, and would have been surprised to be asked to pay...because until now had never known that was the policy. Luckily the "good" choice was available, although because I was a last minute upgrade I only got any choice at all because of snack pack woman, cheese platers, and the vegan next to me who brought her own food (who was not an upgrade but a full mileage seat).
Bottom line if I'm ever asked to pay in F, I will be ok with it, so thank you.
The policy is that you don't get food from the back but in practice, on most airlines, most FAs will bring you whatever you ask for and not charge for it. I suggest asking politely. I've never been turned down on any airline.
